Fear is the response to a perceived danger that can be real or imagined. We cannot live in constant fear for our health’s sake.
“Fear is a natural, powerful, and primitive human emotion…Fear alerts us to the presence of danger or the threat of harm, whether that danger is physical or psychological. Sometimes fear stems from real threats, but it can also originate from imagined dangers”. Ref: https://www.verywellmind.com/the-psychology-of-fear-2671696
As I drove my car this morning, on my way to teach an Aqua Class, my mind was happily blank and relaxed for a good ten minutes. It didn’t take long though, before an idea jumped into my mind, “Fear”. My thoughts were drawn into the emotion of fear and I started feeling all the calamity and chaos that surrounds FEAR affecting our bodies both physically and psychologically. I felt an urge to write a short article to raise the awareness of this very debilitating emotion. Some of my ideas may sound a little controversial but it is written with love, knowledge and compassion for those that are suffering with fear in these uncertain times as we tip-toe into 2021.
Prior to 2020 we were fed FEAR of Terrorism and FEAR of the annual Flu season, of which both have miraculously disappeared completely on Australian news. Then in 2020 the FEAR of Corona has been brought into our homes which has significantly changed our lives. For some, the FEAR of a Corona Vaccine has been added to the melting pot of fear.
The worse offender of our FEAR is the Fear-Fed-News that has been with us for many decades but I now believe is becoming much more fear driven than ever before. Any wonder many people are becoming highly anxious and stressed at the constant onslaught of daily news reporting FEAR based events.
We cannot live in constant FEAR, our bodies will not be able to function optimally. Our nervous and immune systems will suffer the most.
I experienced an episode when I was a teenager, where I was in such extreme fear at the thought of getting into trouble with adults, I was finding it difficult to breath and my lungs could not get enough oxygen. I started having an asthma episode (having never had asthma before). In hindsight It didn’t last long and I fully recovered within minutes from adult reassurance. This is just a brief example of how fear can develop into a life threatening physical condition very quickly.
What is the answer? Be aware of the FEAR that we are INGESTING into our BODIES and MINDS.
What we think and talk about (focussing our energy on) we create. If we worry, we will attract the worries we are worrying about! When we are experiencing fear we enter the fight or flight mode of the nervous system, this will switch-off the immune system until the fear has subsided. This is how constant fear becomes the real enemy to our health and wellbeing.
If you feel stressed and concerned about all the sad daily news, TURN OFF the television for a few days or a week and choose some interesting things to occupy your mind and body that you enjoy. A good friend of mine said she never watches the news but asks her family to inform her if there is anything she really needs to know. This is a good example of self-care and self-love, knowing your own limitations.
Personally, I am highly sensitive to the external world, that’s probably why I love writing at home or exercising in nature. I can feel when things are building up in my body and I need to take a break from all the FEAR based energy of our news reports. You will drown in the external storm if you cannot release your internal thinking of fear.
Learn how to be kind to one-self by listening to your mind, body and soul’s awareness of how the external world affects you.
